Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) assist the clergy in distributing Holy Communion to the faithful.
Who Can Serve as an EMHC?
EMHCs are parishioners who are practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church. They are called to be people of deep faith who believe in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
Training and Commissioning
Training is provided by the Archdiocese of Washington’s Office of Worship, followed by additional practical training at the parish to prepare EMHCs for their specific roles and responsibilities within our community.
Before beginning their service, EMHCs are formally recognized and received by the parish community at Mass. The pastor then confers his blessing and commissions them to serve for a term of three years, renewable for an additional three years.
Service and Responsibilities
EMHCs are scheduled to serve at least once a month at a Sunday Mass, as well as at weekday Masses if available. They may also assist at funerals, weddings, and other liturgies as needed.
As an extension of this ministry, EMHCs may also bring Holy Communion to the homebound when a priest or deacon is unavailable. Those who feel called to serve in this capacity can receive additional training through the parish’s Raphael Ministry.
