The mission of a Reader (Lector) is to proclaim God’s living word, allowing Him to speak to us and call us to respond in faith and love.
Who Can Serve as a Reader?
Readers are parishioners who are practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church and are willing to dedicate their time and talent to serving in the liturgy. They are called to be people of deep faith who believe in the transformative power of God’s word as His divine message to us.
Training and Commissioning
Training is provided by the Archdiocese of Washington’s Office of Worship, followed by additional practical training at the parish to familiarize Readers with specific procedures and responsibilities.
Before beginning their ministry, Readers are formally recognized and received by the parish community at Mass, where the pastor confers his blessing. They are commissioned to serve for a term of three years, which may be renewed for an additional three years.
Service and Responsibilities
Readers are scheduled to serve at least once a month at a Sunday Mass, as well as at weekday Masses if available. They may also be called upon to serve at funerals, weddings, and other liturgical celebrations as needed.
Youth Participation
Youth in 8th grade and above are especially encouraged to participate in this ministry and take an active role in our liturgical celebrations.
